About

Mosaic Mural Works: Commissions and Collaborations

Commissions: We consult with you to design and create a mural for your  school, organization or business.  We will discuss imagery, lettering, colors, materials and size and timeline.

Collaborations:  Similar to commision work, we will have a thourough consulation about design and materials needs.  Next, we design and draft a detailed mural.  Finally, we will come to your location and work with your students, employees, and staff to create the mural collaboratively.

Erin Maxwell
Erin began creating her mosaic artwork over fourteen years ago. Using most anything she can get her hands on, Erin uses a combination of materials including ceramic tiles, broken dishes, smalti, stained glass, pebbles and found objects. A UC Riverside graduate with a B.A. in Theatre, Erin lived in San Francisco for six years and worked in artist management, acting, and theatre production management. Erin showcased her mosaic art in San Francisco at Coffee to the People, the Garage Theatre, and Femina Potens Art Gallery.  After moving back to Riverside in 2011, she has exhibited her art at Division 9 Gallery, Artisans Collective, Riverside Community Arts Association, The Riverside Art Museum and Zacateca's Cafe.   Her true passion is in making art in the community.  Erin has worked collaboratively with Grant Elementary School, Troth St. Elementary School,  Monroe Elementary and the Arc of Riverside to create large mosaic murals.  Her goal is to enrich the community, beautify campuses, and create pride in working together to make civic art.

Cathy Maxwell

Cathy is a self-taught mosaic artist.  Fourteen years ago, in 2003, Cathy began to create mosaics, affectionately known to her as "my art therapy".  She finds inspiration from her many travels to Mexico, Mexican folk art, her family, her dogs and everyday life.  In 2010, Cathy began teaching Beginning Mosaic workshops at her home studio and at the Riverside Art Museum.  Over the past twelve years, Cathy has collaborated with her husband, Greg, on various art fund raising projects for the Riverside Art Museum.  Cathy has also collaborated with her daughter, Erin, working with elementary school students to create mosaic murals for their schools.  She has also assisted with "hands on" public murals for the Saturation Festival, the Artisans Collective and Riverside's monthy Arts Walk.  In March 2013, Cathy, Erin and Greg began the design concept and creation of the “National Wall of Respect”, a 43 foot by 9 foot mosaic mural, commissioned by the Arc of Riverside County.  During 2014 and 2015, Cathy worked as an Independent Arts Educator in the Arts & Minds Program through the Riverside Arts Council.  She taught mosaic art in the after school program to elementary and middle school students in the Riverside Unified School District.  Cathy’s goal is to bring awareness to the beauty and inspiration that public art offers, as well as the important dialouge that public art brings to people of all ages.

Greg Maxwell

Greg Maxwell, a native of Riverside, is a General Contractor and owner of Maxwell Construction (www.maxwellconstruction.weebly.com).  He began creating mosaic art over twenty years ago.  Much of Greg’s inspiration comes from historical sites in Riverside, underwater wild life and his love of sailing.  Over the past twelve years, Greg has displayed his art locally at the Life Arts Center, Back to the Grind, the Riverside Art Museum, the Artscape exhibit, Division 9 Gallery, the Riverside Community Arts Association and the Mission Inn Museum Store.  To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Riverside's Sister City relationship with Sendai, Japan, the City of Riverside commissioned Greg and Cathy to create mosaic art on a five foot tall orange sculpture. The art has been on permanent display since 2007 at the Sendai International Relations Association in Sendai, Japan.  In December 2012, Greg participated in Riverside's first Artisans Collective in downtown Riverside.  In 2013, Greg collaborated with Cathy and Erin on the design and creation of a 43 foot by 9 foot mosaic mural for the Arc of Riverside County.  Greg looks forward to creating more public art in his community and beyond.
